How to get Organized

New Year’s Resolution: Get Organized in 2015

At the dawn of a new year, it seems as though everyone has a big resolution that they want to tackle. Some focus on health or weight loss, while others have home improvement or financial goals. If the disorganized state of your home and life is driving you crazy, why not resolve to get organized in 2015? The following tips can give you a starting place to get things under control this year.

Conduct a Purge

Almost everyone is guilty of hanging on to items that have not been used for several years. Over time, all of these belongings can become overwhelming, leaving little space for all of the new things you were gifted over the holidays. Instead of collecting more and more, make it a rule this January to donate, sell or give away at least three items for every new item. This process of purging your home not only clears the way for your new belongings, but also gives your home a cleaner, more peaceful feeling.

Keep it Neat

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to find something only to realize that you don’t remember where you put it. To prevent giving up the search and buying a replacement, take the time to make a special, logical place for those items. Even so much as a key hook or junk-drawer organizer could change your life. Then comes the hard part: make a habit of putting the item back in its place after each use.

As you take down holiday decorations, give yourself an easy reminder of what you have stored in which bin with a label. Then while you’re at it, label and list the contents of every box you’ve got tucked away in your attic, garage, and basement. You’ll be able to find anything you need at a moment’s notice. This project will also help in your purging process.

Set Up a Schedule

A dirty home can look and feel unorganized, but with a cleaning schedule in place, you are much more likely to stay on top of a regular routine. Once your home is decluttered, it is much simpler to keep it clean as well. If possible, try to complete one cleaning task each day of the week. For example, do your laundry on Mondays and Thursdays or clean the bathrooms every Saturday morning. Figure out which days work for you and put it down in writing so that you don’t overlook important areas or jobs.

Pare Down Your Personal Life

In order to have a more organized life overall, your personal life may require a little purging as well. When you have a busy family it can feel like you’re running yourself ragged. This year, make it a priority to spend more time at home together. Limit your extra curricular activities and have dinner together a few more nights per week. You could even start a weekly game night or movie night. The important thing is spending more time with the people you love.
