Things to Do Before Unpacking Moving Boxes

There are so many details to take care of during a move. Many tasks can be done before unpacking moving boxes, making settling in less stressful. If you’re planning a Portland, Oregon move, we’ll minimize your worries by taking care of the packing, loading and transporting of your belongings.

To make the rest of your move go smoothly, take care of as many things as possible before you move. Here’s what you should do before unpacking moving boxes:

The Basics

You want to feel comfortable and secure as soon as you move into a home. Plan to do the following before moving day.

Address: Update your address with the post office, bank and other accounts.

Insurance: Call the agent for your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance. You don’t want a gap in coverage.

Locks: Change the exterior locks. If you’re buying a home, change the locks as soon as possible. You’ll need to ask the landlord to take care of this if you’re renting.

Internet: Sign-up for Internet. You may need to be present for activation, but it’s a good idea to make an appointment to minimize delays.

Utilities: In many cases, utilities will be on but you’ll need to switch everything to your name. Call the power, gas, water and garbage with your information.

Cleaning: Have your new place professionally cleaned.

Smoke alarms and CO detectors: Make sure you have working alarms and detectors from day one.

Remodeling and Redesign

One of the pleasures of moving is decorating your new place. If you’re renting, you’ll have to get the OK before going ahead with changes. Most things can wait, but certain tasks are better done before you move in.

Painting: If you’re planning on painting walls or refinishing cabinets, do this before you move or at the very least, before you unpack. Professional painters work fairly quickly, and will save you a lot of work and hassle.

Floors: Does the carpet need to be replaced? Planning on redoing floors? Some remodels jobs are messy and even potentially hazardous for inhabitants. Complete these chores before moving in.

Window coverings: Unless you want to feel like you’re in a fishbowl, plan ahead for window treatments. If you know what you want, arrange for installation. Even if you haven’t decided on permanent coverings, get something temporary ready for key areas of the home, such as bedrooms and bathrooms.
